OWH Slot Car Talk BBS
"House Rules"
(OWH Bulletin Board Posting Guidelines)
Updated 9/14/00
1) Welcome to The Old Weird Herald Slot Car Talk Page! The purpose of this discussion board is to discuss slot car racing news, info, technical questions, items to trade, events, etc. The Old Weird Herald is about the FUN aspect of slot car racing - so let`s all have fun!!!.2) Keep in mind the positive focus that I desire here, as your "host"; and also remember that this board has an audience of close to 50 countries.
3) Your specific local issues should be discussed among the individuals directly involved IN PERSON (What a concept!;-). I realize that local issues and questions are often relevant to others, and at times more global answers or input are sought - for a broader perspective as a source. That's one of the benefits of a bbs on the web! But do think about whether the posts would be of any interest or relevance to other areas before dealing with specific rules, problems, etc. prior to posting. I know that some people thrive on reading escalating heated discussions, and some love to help add fuel to the fire, and play devil's advocate - but that's not what I want to host here. There are other boards where those cravings can be quenched!
4) I would prefer that everyone used their own name. I realize that some people have their own reasons for remaining anonymous, though, and I suppose that's OK. But if you do insist on using an alias - then choose a moniker or nickname we can get to know you by, and STICK WITH IT! I notice that the more anonymous or varied the alias, the less positive or useful the posts tend to be. Be accountable for your posts, even if it's under an alter ego! ;-)
5) This is one that just BUGS me: The NAME line is for your NAME - comprende'? It is not a place for adding to your subject line, making some "cute" statement or wise crack, etc. If you insist on remaining anonymous, see #4, but don't use this line for comments. I'm anal, OK, and it bugs me!!! ;-)
6) Foul, abusive, derogatory, or slanderous language; backstabbing, outright slander, personal attacks, mocking, bitching, whining, bickering, complaining, (did I miss anything?) and crying in your stale beer or acid flux is not cool here.
MR. WEILER'S NEW RULE 6 ADDENDUM
(RULE 6A) THIS IS YOUR LAST AND ONLY FINAL WARNING----NEVER EVER EVER EVER
send me ANY E-mails complaining about ANYTHING THAT ANYONE is doing on the board. I DETEST TATTLETALES AND CRYBABIES A LOT MORE THAN ANY OF THE OTHER
CRAP THAT GOES ON AT OWH. If you do this I will just bounce the whole thread-including your deathless prose-into the trash or into the black hole of doom and I WILL also ban you for violating rule 6 and completely wasting my time with this crap.Mr. W
7) Posts that violate any/all/some of the above, or ones that I just plain don't like, will get deleted at my utmost whim or desire, depending on the status of my current mood swing, state of mind, or lack of sleep at the time. I am the OWH BBS "Nazi" - if you step out of line, then "NO SOUP FOR YOU!" ;-)
8) This is the slot car board that is NOT hosted by a right wing whacko or a convicted felon...(oops, sorry - that's Tom Leykis' line...) I am your host. ;-)
9) First amendment, freedom of speech, free country, personal rights, right to speak freely, liberty, license, latitude, leeway, or any presumed rights, prerogatives, appanages, birthrights or privileges have absolutely NO relevance or bearing here. This board is not funded, backed, financed, supported, granted, subsidized, capitalized, grubstaked, or otherwise endowed by the US or any other government. It's my web site, my domain, my bbs - so we'll play by my rules! Nyah! ;-P
10) Grown-ups - Toy Cars... keep it in perspective!
Let's all have fun in sharing our common interests in this hobby of building, collecting, and racing these weird but challenging, rewarding, and fun toys we call slot cars!!!
NEW & ADDITIONAL RULES
Updates - Reminders - & Further Scolding by "Mom"
11) No more bickering back & forth. You get one reply, and one rebutal per subject.
12) Language - PG Rated !
13) No posts about posts, or posts about posters, guesses about true identities, ponderings about poster's motivations for their posts, psychoanalysis of posters and posts, theories of government conspiricies, alien autopsies (oops, that's X-Files).
14) No reviews, opinions, or critiques on "Mom's" perfomance, frequency, or percieved fairness of properly monitering this board.
15) Please - no more emails to me to alert, inform, enlighten, or complain to me about any of the above activity. I do check it, and I do see it, and I do deal with it. Don't get your shorts all twisted up in a knot, OK?
16) Here's the toughy... even though there has been some very heavy and enlightening discussions on "ECD", and the whole scope of the slot car racing industry... ENUF ALREADY!!! It's played out gang... it's all been said, and it's getting kinda booring! ;-/ We're here to discuss stuff we enjoy playing with, or why else would we be here?
17) Self-enforced guideline / recommendation: for every 5 (five) posts that you make, you must play with your slot cars at least once (1 x). It is "Mom's" belief that the refresher course in the applied content of the original subject matter of this web site and forum, should inject and instill a renewed sence of relevance to the reading and posting enjoyement of the topic at hand. Ya folla?
I'm proud as heck of this bulletin board's popularity, and I enjoy reading and conversing here with so many friends, some I've met, and some I've only "met" online... but gang - get out your slot cars and build, collect, race, and enjoy them!!! Then come back here and share! ;-)
Even more updates... (added 9/12/99) Updated 9/14/00
OWH's Policy Regarding Shameless Plugs, Etc.
Without trying to pin down my policies to specifics... here's basically my feelings on shameless plugs and general sales etiquette on the OWH Slot Car Talk BBS...
First, here's my feelings regarding where to throw your slot car dollars:
By all means, whenever possible or practical, support your local raceway or hobby shop. If you race at a track, and they sell stuff to support keeping a track there, then you should support them buy buying the toys you race there from them, whenever possible.
If you don't have a local raceway or hobby shop, or are unable to get the products you need or want from a local source, then thank goodness that there are so many sources of mail-order and online shops, with a wide variety of specialties, who may have the items or sevices you need.
(see http://www.oldweirdherald.com/links.html)General guidelines regarding "Shameless Plugs":
18) All topics and announcements must be related to slot cars, or of particular interest to slot car enthusiasts.
19) Announcements of new products or services are welcome here. OWH's New Products page is very popular, indicating that this information is of great interest to readers!
20) "Shameless plugs" for existing products and services are also welcome, when they pertain to the thread topic, or when informing of availability of an item or service a reader/poster is looking for.
21) Other plugs are cool, as long as common sense prevails. I'm betting you'll know when you've crossed that line between announcing something readers may be interested in, and hocking garbage that you need to unload upon us unsuspecting "marks". ;-) If it get's out of line, I'll either email the offending party privately (if they leave their email address), or publicly badger, demean, and/or humiliate them, depending on the circumstances. ;-)
22) Offering information, besides simply stating "you can buy it from us", is considered a bonus, and is definately cool, if it is answering a posted question. The more useful info here the better.
More ramblings from "Mom"...
Informing a poster who asks where a product is available that you have it or can help them is generally OK in my book. There have now been cases where posts plugging products available from profit motivated companies or individual suppliers has in fact crossed over that line on occassion to what would be more appropriately handled as a paid advertisement.
Since this has began cropping up, it at least indicates a need for a proper place and policy for handling commercial advertising posts. So... OWH now has a new "Commercial Classified Ads" board in addition to the Free "Classified Ads" board. Here's a few new additional rules & policies regarding these 2 boards:
23) Free Classified ads are for individuals wanting to buy or looking to unload one of a kind items on a not-for-profit basis at or below retail value. A commercial ad is an announcement or advertisement for mass-produced products, services, collectibles, business items or equipment, etc., being sold for profit. Don't get silly on how you define "profit"... you get my drift, OK?
24 ) There may be a fine line at times between what might be considered a "free classified ad" and a "paid commercial ad". If in doubt, it is always safer to lean towards the one that puts money in OWH's pocket. If you err towards the freebie and are wrong, you might get slammed by readers or upset poor ol' "mom" or the OWH moderators. If you err towards the paid ads, at least you support OWH and help in keeping OWH supplied with Tums.
For more info regarding the new OWH Commercial Classified Ads board, including prices and policies, as well as handy-dandy online secure payment buttons for paying for ads online CLICK HERE.
Remember - OWH Commercial Classified Ads are not only a great way to reach thousands of slot car racers, but are a great bargain, and also help support OWH in providing a web site and very popular bulletin board for slot car racers to meet and share their hobby.
OWH also offers a "Pitstop" new products page. It gets THOUSANDS of hits per month from slot racers hungry for info about new stuff for their toy car addiction. The page continues to get hits (even though so far it is rarely updated) because people keep hoping to see new stuff. Free plugs are offered to suppliers who send me press releases, catalogs, pictures, samples, bribes, etc... but as you can see, so far, I rarely hear from suppliers. I have a problem figuring this one out - why they wouldn't be filling my mailbox for this free publicity. ;-/
Advertising on OWH has got to be the best bargain around, and earns my added product "pimping" efforts as well. OWH sponsors help support this forum and all the other cool stuff that OWH provides, and enables me to pay my internet & software bills, and occassionally eat, while chained to my PC pumping out material and maintaining this web site.
I hope this clears up any questions regarding what I as "host" of this board consider acceptable as well as board "etiquette" regarding posts & plugs.
