The
Prize - The New
Magblaster
II Zapper!

Drawing held December 17th, 1999!
The tickets were in, and all the entrants were wondering... who would be the lucky winner of the cool new Magblaster II Magnet Zapper in The Old Weird Herald's first Raffle! To ensure that all entries had been recieved, as well as to hold the actual drawing at a local slot car race (and in front of plenty of witnesses!), I decided to have the winning ticket drawn at the Friday night race on 12/17/99 at West Seattle Speedway & Hobby. I live less then a mile from WSS&H, and I race there nearly every friday night. We had two full fields of Parma FCR races, plus 16-D NASCAR and GTP Group 10! In the tradition of The Old Weird Herald (and it's overly anal retentive publisher) every effort was made to ensure that the simple task of drawing a winning ticket was elevated into a major big deal. The entries were painstakingly logged into a data base, with multiple entries filled in, including bonus tickets for those who included the business card of their local raceway. They were then sequencially serialized beginning with the first ticket number on the roll of tickets. No names or markings were on the tickets, and the "master list" remained hidden until after the winning ticket was drawn and announced.
I spared no expense for this illustrious event, and managed to scrounge up a Costco-size Mayonaise jug to contain the tickets. The huge financial success of the event is revealed here by the inch-deep layer of raffle tickets in the bottom of the jug! Whoopie - I'm rich! ;-)
The Nichols kids (well, 3 of 'em anyway... or about 15 cents worth ;-), eagerly volunteered to help pick the winner from the OWH Raffle Jug. After plenty of shaking and a thorough mixing, Maria dug in to extract the lucky winning ticket. With the local gang looking on, and in spite of jokes of bribes, threats, and any other implications of persuasion or favoratism, every step was taken to ensure that this raffle was conducted fair and square.
Tension was high as Maria pulls out the winning ticket - number 7710548... Here's the winning ticket - now... who's the lucky winner??? A quick search of the database printout reveals... The winner is Howie Lloyd! Otherwise known to OWH "Slot Car Talk" regular readers as "Howie the Slot Squid! Many of you wing car racers may also know Howie from his Group 27 racing. Howie has traveled to race at the USRA Nats, including the 1998 Nats at R-Geo! Howie had ordered 5 tickets, plus recieved a 6th bonus ticket for sending in a business card from South Hill Slots in Puyallup (gee thanks Howie - like I don't have one of those yet! ;-).
Although the local Seattle crowd were all wanting to win, of course, the odds were slim, with the vast majority of entrants being from other states. The long-distance award (no prize, it's just an expression) goes to "Zippity" from New Zealand! The "Stuffing the Jug" award for the most tickets ordered goes to Todd "Radical Racing" from Calif. (THANKS!!!)
Howie the "slotsquid" is now the lucky owner of his very own Magblaster II Magnet Zapper!!!
Us Seattle area racers have really missed Howie these past couple months, and he has recently moved, but now he's going to have to start showing up at races again real soon! I wish I could see Howie's reaction when he finds out he won!
While I felt like every OWH reader who entered in the OWH Raffle is a friend, it was a special thrill to have the winner wind up being a local racer who's also one of the nicest slot racers around anywhere!

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Rick Benardo of R-Geo Raceway , manufacturer of the Magblaster II Magnet Zapper, for providing the cool prize for the very first OWH Raffle!I also want to thank all of the way cool OWH readers who took the time to send in their hard-earned cash to enter the OWH Raffle!!! I wish you all could have won, but to me you're all winners! Your entries have helped to support OWH and to provide an online meeting place where us "grown-ups who play with toy cars" from all over the world can hang out and share our interest in this weird hobby/sport of racing slot cars!
Thanks to everyone who participated and helped make this event happen!
This was a lot of work, but a ton of fun, so look for another OWH Raffle to happen soon! :-)
